Jacquard offers many chemicals and auxilliaries to complement their dyes. Always practice studio safety when using dyes and chemicals. Keep dyes, paints and chemicals away from children. Avoid unnecessary personal contact. Do not take internally.
Airfix - An additive for Jacquards: Textile Colors, Neopaque, and Dye-Na-Flow (as well as most other acrylic fabric paints). Use Airfix as a catalyst to fix colors when heat setting is not practical.
Alum - Used to pre-treat fabric or paper before marbling so designs transfer well. Alum is also used with some natural dyes as a mordant.
Calgon - Hard water can cause streaking and uneven color when dyeing. Calgon keeps calcium and other mineral in suspension; therefore, they will not interfere with the dyeing process.
Carrageenan - Carageenan is a natural seaweed gelling agent that provides a viscous surface for marbling on fabric and paper.
Gum Arabic - Use Gum Arabic with Pearl Ex, or any other dry pigment, and water to make watercolor paints. Gum Arabic will gradually increase tack as it dries. Easily cleans up with water. Dried cakes of Gum Arabic paint mixture can be reconstituted with water. Used for washes, glazes and stamping.
Permanent Dyeset Concentrate - Permanent Dyeset Concentrate is used as a fixative for Green Label Silk Colors dye. It also can be an alternative to steam setting.
Reduran - A hand cleaning cream that helps remove dye from skin.
Silk Salt - This salt creates beautiful textures on fabric.
Soda Ash - Soda Ash dye fixer is a mild alkali that promotes the chemical reaction between Procion MX fiber reactive dyes and cellulose fiber. It is also known as sodium carbonate, washing soda or sal soda. Soda Ash is necessary to activate and set Procion MX dye.
Sodium Alginate SH - Sodium Alginate SH is a seaweed derivative that is used to thicken dyes for painting, stamping or screen printing.
Synthrapol - Synthrapol is an industrial strength, neutral detergent used as a prewash, afterwash or wetting agent for paint and dye. It helps prevent backstaining because of its unique characteristic of keeping loose dye particles in suspension.
Urea - Urea is a humectant that attracts moisture from the air. Urea is used when applying dye solutions directly to fabric, as in tie dyeing or hand painting. It slows the drying process; therefore, it allows more time for the dye to react with the fiber and yields deeper shades. Urea can be used with Sodium Alginate thickener for screen printing, painting or direct dye application.
Methocel - Methocel is a synthetic, less expensive alternative to Carrageenan that provides a viscous surface for marbling on fabric and paper. It can also be used as a marbling medium.
Discharge Paste - Discharge Paste is for removing areas of color from dyed natural fabrics.
Screen Life - An additive for extending the open time of water-based screen inks and paints when screen printing.
